The Geological Society is both the learned society and professional body for geoscientists across the UK, and through its programme of cutting edge science meetings and publications, constitutes a forum in which 12,000 members from across academia, industry and government develop and share knowledge and views. It is a world-leading communicator of Earth science – through its scholarly publishing, library and information services, cutting-edge scientific conferences, education activities and outreach to the general public. It also provides impartial scientific information and evidence to support policy-making and public debate about the challenges facing humanity.
The Society works to support the promotion, protection and conservation of our geological heritage through a number of activities. Our Geoconservation Committee aims to help conserve the diverse geology and rich geological heritage of the UK, and to pass it in good order to future generations for their investigation, education and enjoyment. In 2014, we launched a major initiative to identify and celebrate 100 Great Geosites in the UK and Ireland, with the help of our Fellows and members of the public. It featured some of the most diverse and beautiful geology in the world, spanning most of geological time, from the oldest Pre-Cambrian rocks to the youngest Quaternary sediments, as well as some of the industrial and social achievements which have sprung from this unique geological heritage. You can find out more about this work and all our activities on the Geological Society website.
